Since 1851, Baylor’s motto has begun with “Pro Ecclesia” — for the Church. A host of Baylor academic programs are designed specifically to build up and support pastors, congregations, theologians, and other parts of the body of Christ — but one effort is far more direct.
For years, Truett Seminary has worked to connect churches with current seminary students and alumni, benefitting both congregations and individuals. At its core, the goal is to make sure the matches made serve both the church and the pastor.
Truett administrators are in regular conversation with hundreds of churches across the globe about their needs — both in terms of specific roles (lead pastor, worship pastor, youth pastor, etc.) and timing (does the spot need filling immediately, or is the church taking time to fill the role?).
“We have those conversations to learn the DNA of each church, what’s critical to that church and congregation, and then identifying the person or people who fit that criteria,” says Rev. Kenneth McNeil (MDiv ’18), Truett’s director of ministry connections and alumni relations. “Because we don’t want to send resumes or people who won’t fit with that congregation. Sometimes it’s having honest conversations about where the church is, what they’re looking for, and realistic expectations, for the church and our students and alumni.”
At the same time, Truett is on the other side of things, connecting and conversing with seminary students and alumni, discussing where they are at spiritually, what they feel called to do within the Church, and other aspects of their spiritual health. Whenever a church inquires about filling a role, Truett leaders are ready to suggest a good fit.
“Four hundred churches and nonprofits connected with us on our website last year, and that generates a phone call from a real human being on our end every single time,” says Dr. Jack Bodenhamer (DMin ’21), Truett’s assistant dean of external affairs. “We don’t just sent blanket emails; it’s a relational thing. We try to get to know individuals, whether students or alumni, as best we can, and we try to get to know churches and opportunities as best we can. And then we’re making connections, based on theological fit, cultural fit, all those things, to set up a conversation. It’s people work.”
In the end, Truett’s goal is both to equip God-called people for ministry and to help them land in the right spot to serve the Christ’s Church. Congregations and Truett alumni can find more information on the Truett website.
